Dr. Ferrara Biography
Dr. Stephen Ferrara serves as the Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, advising the Secretary of Defense on health and force protection policies. Previously, he was Deputy Director for Clinical Operations in the National Capital Region, overseeing seven medical facilities serving over 500,000 beneficiaries. He also worked as an interventional radiologist at Walter Reed and a Clinical Professor at the Uniformed Services University.
A 25-year Navy veteran, Ferrara completed combat and humanitarian missions with the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps, and served as the Navy’s Chief Medical Officer, leading 63,000 medical professionals. Post-Navy, he was the CIA’s Chief Medical Officer and a Senior Intelligence Service Officer. During the 113th Congress, he served as a Congressional Fellow, drafting healthcare legislation.
Dr. Ferrara earned a bachelor’s degree from UCLA (1991) and an MD from the Uniformed Services University (1995). He completed a surgical internship, radiology residency, and fellowship in vascular and interventional radiology. An accomplished speaker, he has delivered over 100 lectures on interventional radiology, health policy, and economics.
