DR. JOHNSON BIO
COL(R) Anthony James Johnson, MD (1965-2022) graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1987 with a B.S. in Chemistry, one of only 19 cadets in his class authorized to attend medical school. An Alpha Omega Alpha scholar, he earned his medical degree at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in 1991, completed a flight surgeon assignment at Fort Bragg (1992-1994), and finished an ophthalmology residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in 1997. He completed a fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at Emory University in 2002 and returned to BAMC as a staff ophthalmologist.
In 2003, COL(R) Johnson deployed for 13 months during Operation Iraqi Freedom as the only operating ophthalmologist for the 47th and 28th Combat Support Hospitals, performing over 400 surgical procedures in theater. From 2004 to 2011 he served at BAMC as a cornea and refractive surgeon, residency director, and Chief of Ophthalmology. From 2011 to 2015 he founded and led the Army's first Eye Trauma and Vision Restoration Research Unit at the Institute of Surgical Research. He retired as a Colonel in 2015 after 32 years of active duty, then continued treating patients as a civilian GS staff ophthalmologist at BAMC until October 2021.
COL(R) Johnson's career included humanitarian surgical missions to Honduras, Panama, Peru, Burkina Faso, and Nepal, two patents, and numerous academic publications and speaking engagements, including invitations to the World Cornea Congress. He is remembered above all as a mentor: generations of ophthalmology residents trained under him at Brooke Army Medical Center and now serve as staff and subject matter experts throughout the military health system.
COL (Ret) Johnson was married to Rinna for 34 years and is survived by her and their daughters, Amanda and Alexis.
